Watch groups with kids in them

A plain description of what exists today, and what doesn’t yet — written for parents deciding whether to add a child to a watch group.

How it works today

When you invite someone to a watch group, you (or another manager of that group) can mark them as a kid. That shows a small “Kid” tag next to their name everywhere the group is displayed, so every adult in the group can see at a glance who they’re sharing recommendations, ratings, and chat with.

A child doesn’t set this flag themselves — it’s set by whoever manages the group, and only a manager can change it. Feature Night doesn’t independently verify anyone’s age; the flag reflects what the group’s manager has told us.

What the Kid tag does not do yet

Being direct about current limits matters more here than anywhere else on the site:

  • It does not filter or hide mature titles, ratings, or recommendations from a marked child.
  • It does not restrict what a marked child can see or post in shared chat.
  • It does not require separate parental consent beyond whoever set up the account for that child.

In short: the Kid tag today is a visibility label, not a content filter or an access control. If you’re adding a child to a watch group with adults recommending R-rated or mature TV content, assume they can see everything the rest of the group can see.

What we’d recommend in the meantime

  • Keep kid-inclusive watch groups separate from ones where adults share mature recommendations.
  • Use the “Kid” tag as a signal to other adults in the group to keep what they post appropriate — not as a technical safeguard.
  • A parent or guardian should be the one managing any account used by a child under 13.

What’s on the roadmap

Real content filtering by maturity rating, a dedicated kid mode, and parental approval on recommendations sent to a child are planned but not built yet. This page will be updated when they ship, and the Kid tag’s description above will be corrected to match.
